We were in need of some new surrogates and have gone for Highlanders. They are a breed David and I know well having worked with them for many years. They will stay out all year, they are a nice size and should make good mums To their pure lowline calves. We have had them dehorned so they don’t pull the fences to bits and can be easily handled in our existing handling system – as they are going to be surrogates they will be handled regularly. So we had a long trip upto Cheshire where David was able to select some nice quiet halter trained animals with the required health status we need. They are currently in isolation until they have passed further tests here but then we will get cracking with them.
